The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential ambition is aimed at avoiding possible investigations and prosecution over alleged cases of corruption and abuse of office.
The party made the allegation in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, and made available on Sunday.
Makinde, who is serving his second term as governor of Oyo State, is expected to leave office in May 2027.
According to Sadare, the governor’s decision to seek the presidency is allegedly part of a plan to create an avenue for him to leave Nigeria before the expiration of his tenure.
The APC spokesman claimed that Makinde was attempting to avoid accountability over what he described as alleged cases of graft and abuse of office.
Sadare further alleged that the governor was planning to leave the country from January 2027, describing the presidential bid as an attempt to distract Nigerians and anti-graft agencies.
“Meanwhile, we can authoritatively inform the whole world that Makinde is only out to hoodwink Nigerians, distract the anti-graft agencies which are on his cases and also secure an escape route from the country anytime from January 1, 2027,” he said.
The APC spokesman added that the party was monitoring the situation and claimed that relevant security agencies had been alerted.
“We are working on the details of his plans even as relevant security agents are already on red alert because he (Makinde) will be made to answer for all his atrocities since he was sworn in as governor in May 2019,” Sadare said.
The allegations are claims by the Oyo APC and were not independently established in the statement. The party did not provide specific details of the alleged graft cases or evidence supporting its claim that Makinde intends to leave the country.
Makinde has not, in the statement referenced, responded to the allegations.
