The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2027 election, Omoyele Sowore, has vowed not to seek medical treatment outside Nigeria if he becomes president.
Sowore made the declaration during an interview on Thursday, while outlining his views on leadership and the use of public resources.
The AAC candidate said he would rely on medical facilities within the country and would not travel abroad for treatment, regardless of the nature of any illness he might develop while in office.
He said, “Any sickness that I can’t treat in Nigeria when I become president should better kill me. I can tell you that for free.”
Sowore also pledged to keep his family from becoming a financial burden on the Nigerian government if elected.
He said his administration would be focused on serving Nigerians and would not use the presidency to advance personal or family interests.
Addressing the issue of the First Lady’s office, Sowore argued that the position is not established by the Nigerian Constitution.
He explained that although becoming president would not affect his marriage, his wife would not occupy an official First Lady position under his administration.
“I’m not bringing family liabilities back to Nigeria. There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady,” he said.
Sowore added that women would still have opportunities to participate in governance, but argued that such participation should not require the creation of an office he considers unconstitutional.
He maintained that government resources should be channelled towards public projects and programmes designed to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
