Kanu Petitions NBA: Accuses Judges of Gross Judicial Misconduct

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has petitioned the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), urging it to sanction Justices Binta Nyako, Haruna Tsammani, and Garba Lawal over what he described as gross judicial misconduct in his ongoing trial.

In his petition, Kanu outlined a series of alleged infractions committed by the judicial officers, insisting that their conduct has undermined fair hearing and eroded confidence in Nigeria’s justice system. He called on the NBA, currently holding its annual conference in Enugu, to launch a thorough investigation and take disciplinary action against the judges.

Kanu further urged the association to publish a report condemning what he termed the “abuse of civil procedures to weaken criminal law” and to address the reintroduction of repealed statutes in his case.

His lawyer, while faulting the Federal Government’s legal tactics, stressed that no Nigerian should be subjected to abduction or trial under laws that have been repealed. He maintained that the NBA must rise to hold judges accountable in order to restore public faith in both the Bar and the Bench.

According to Kanu, the “catalogue” of alleged judicial infractions “now stands as an un-erasable blot on Nigeria’s legal conscience.”

Kanu, who was extradited from Kenya in June 2021, has remained in detention at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja, where he continues to face trial on terrorism-related charges.
