The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has reportedly appealed to world football governing body FIFA over moves by the Nigerian government to remove the federation’s board.
The development follows the government’s directive to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to establish an interim committee to manage Nigerian football and halt the planned NFF elections.
The decision reportedly came after Nigeria’s women’s national team failed to qualify for the Women’s World Cup for the first time, following the Super Eagles’ failure to secure a place at the men’s tournament.
Gusau’s board had been preparing for the NFF elections scheduled for September, but the proposed intervention could now prevent the poll from taking place.
According to reports, Gusau has written to FIFA, alleging government interference in the administration of football. Such interference could potentially expose Nigeria to FIFA sanctions if the world governing body determines that the autonomy of the NFF has been violated.
However, the NSC is reportedly working on a process it believes will avoid breaching FIFA regulations. The Gusau-led board has also allegedly been asked to resign voluntarily or risk being removed from office.
The situation has created fresh uncertainty around the leadership of Nigerian football, with FIFA’s response expected to determine the next phase of the crisis.
