The Federal Government has fulfilled its cash reward to members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
The National Sports Commission confirmed that each player of the championship-winning team received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each team official received the equivalent of $50,000.
According to the commission, the payments were made on September 9, 2026, with all players and officials confirming receipt of the funds.
D’Tigress made history at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket by securing their fifth consecutive continental title and seventh championship overall.
The latest payment represents the completion of the financial component of the Presidential Reward announced for the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following their outstanding performance.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the NSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, the commission said all aspects of the President’s reward package had now been fulfilled.
The package comprised three-bedroom flats in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON), as well as cash awards for the players and officials.
“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, comprising a three-bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and naira equivalent of $100,000 to players and $50,000 to officials, have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement said.
The NSC said the successful completion of the payments underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising and rewarding outstanding achievements by Nigerian athletes on the international stage.
The D’Tigress victory at the 2025 Afrobasket further cemented Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball on the African continent, with the team extending its remarkable winning streak and adding another title to its impressive record.
The fulfilment of the Presidential Reward is expected to further boost morale among the players and officials as Nigeria continues preparations for upcoming international basketball competitions.
