Arsenal opened their Premier League campaign on a high note after defeating Manchester United 1–0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
The decisive moment came in the 13th minute when defender Riccardo Calafiori headed home from a corner kick. United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to deal with the delivery, allowing Calafiori to pounce and give the Gunners the only goal of the game.
Despite going behind early, Manchester United dominated possession and launched wave after wave of attacks. They registered 22 shots—their highest tally against Arsenal in over a decade—but were denied repeatedly by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, who produced crucial saves to secure the clean sheet.
United’s new signings, including Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, showed glimpses of quality but could not find the breakthrough. Patrick Dorgu came closest when his strike rattled the post. On the other end, Arsenal’s new striker Viktor Gyökeres endured a quiet debut and was substituted early in the second half.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised his side’s efficiency, admitting that while the goal came from an error, the team showed maturity in holding off United’s pressure. “We were solid in both boxes, and that made the difference,” he said.
United’s boss Ruben Amorim, though disappointed, remained optimistic. He pointed to his team’s pressing, possession, and intensity as positive signs, insisting that United “can beat anybody” if they continue to improve.
The win highlights Arsenal’s set-piece mastery, with Calafiori’s strike marking their 31st goal from corners since 2023–24, more than any other Premier League team.
For Arsenal, the victory provides momentum as they chase another strong league campaign, while United will be left frustrated after failing to capitalize on their dominance in front of their home fans.
