WhatsApp Set to Replace Phone Numbers with Usernames in Major Privacy Update
In a bold move aimed at strengthening user privacy, WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that will allow users to connect using usernames instead of their phone numbers — a major shift in how people interact on the world’s most popular messaging app.

The feature, which is currently being tested in WhatsApp’s beta version, will enable users to create unique usernames that can be used to find and chat with others without disclosing their personal phone numbers. This move aligns WhatsApp with platforms like Telegram, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), which already allow similar identity-based connections.

According to early reports and leaked screenshots from beta testers, the app will introduce a new “Username” section in the user profile settings. This will let users choose personalized handles and decide whether to make their phone numbers visible or keep them hidden from public view — a significant upgrade for those concerned about privacy, particularly in large or business-related group chats.

Experts believe this change could transform WhatsApp into a more social network–like platform, encouraging people to connect more freely without fear of exposing personal contact information.
However, the development has also raised concerns about potential username hoarding, impersonation, and identity theft, as users may rush to secure popular or brand-related names. In response, WhatsApp is said to be working on verification and security mechanisms to prevent misuse and ensure username authenticity.

If successfully implemented, the feature could redefine the WhatsApp experience for over two billion users worldwide, marking one of the biggest updates in the app’s history. It signals a strategic evolution — from a simple messaging service tied to phone numbers, to a more flexible and privacy-focused communication platform.

The feature is still in testing, and WhatsApp has not yet announced an official release date. But given the buzz around it, users may soon see “@usernames” becoming the new way to connect — no phone number required.
