The price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, has increased to as much as N1,380 per litre in parts of Lagos, following a fresh hike in the product’s gantry price by Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
The increase has also triggered higher transportation fares in parts of Lagos and Ogun states, adding to the financial burden on commuters and households.
Dangote Refinery raised its petrol gantry price from N1,265 to N1,350 per litre, representing an N85 increase.
The new price was announced late Friday by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals and became effective on September 12, 2026.
In a circular notifying customers of the adjustment, the refinery stated that its revised PMS gantry and coastal prices would take effect from September 12.
Following the development, checks across filling stations in Lagos and Ogun showed that petrol prices had risen in several locations.
At the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited filling station in Mangoro, Ikeja, petrol was sold for N1,380 per litre, while an Ardova Petroleum filling station in Alakuko, Lagos, dispensed the product at N1,370 per litre.
In Ota, Ogun State, petrol was sold for N1,335 per litre at the Ardova Petroleum station in Antenna. A-F Yomis filling station in Iju, Ota, sold the product for N1,340 per litre, while NIPCO sold it at N1,305 per litre.
The increase in fuel prices has also begun to affect public transportation, with operators adjusting fares to reflect the higher cost of running their vehicles.
At the airport shuttle park in Ikeja, passengers travelling from Ikeja to the NAHCO area were charged N400 per person, up from the previous fare.
One passenger who protested the new fare insisted that he would only pay N300.
The conductor, however, attributed the increase to the rising cost of petrol, explaining that transport operators were also being affected by the higher pump prices.
In Ogun State, the fare for passengers travelling from Atan to Ojuore had increased from N1,000 to N1,200 as of the time of the report.
The latest petrol price increase is expected to place additional pressure on transportation costs as operators continue to adjust their fares in response to rising fuel expenses.
The development could also worsen the cost-of-living pressures facing Nigerians, particularly low-income earners who depend heavily on public transportation for their daily activities.
