Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office at a critical period in Nigeria’s history, praising the President for implementing reforms he believes are repositioning the nation’s economy.
Okowa made the remarks in Asaba while receiving the national leadership of the Working People United (WPU), which paid him a courtesy visit.
According to the former governor, the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, have significantly improved the financial standing of states and local governments.
He noted that before President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, many state governments struggled to meet basic obligations, including the payment of workers' salaries.
"Beyond the removal of fuel subsidy, President Tinubu has grown the economy to the extent that states and local governments are now financially stable. They were not stable before now.
"By May 2023, no fewer than 27 states were unable to pay salaries. Today, states and local governments can meet their obligations. That did not happen by chance; it is the result of the courageous leadership of President Tinubu," Okowa said.
The former governor urged Nigerians to continue supporting the President's reform agenda, expressing confidence that a second term would enable him to consolidate the progress already made.
"We all know that if he is given the opportunity to serve a second term, the economy will be further repositioned to better serve the interests of Nigerians," he added.
Okowa also commended the Federal Government's National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing it as one of the administration's major initiatives aimed at expanding access to tertiary education.
He disclosed that more than 1.6 million students had benefited from the student loan scheme, noting that many who initially doubted the programme had since embraced it.
He encouraged eligible students who were yet to apply to take advantage of the initiative, stressing that it had become a vital support system for higher education.
Reiterating his support for the Tinubu administration, Okowa maintained that the President deserves another term in office to complete the ongoing reforms and expressed optimism that Nigerians would increasingly appreciate the impact of the government's policies.
He also called on members of the Working People United to rally behind the administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the Working People United, Comrade Williams Akporeha, said the delegation visited Okowa to formally introduce the group's objectives and inaugurate its Delta State chapter.
Akporeha explained that the organisation comprises public and private sector workers, self-employed individuals, and artisans committed to promoting good governance and responsible political participation.
He reaffirmed the group's support for Okowa's senatorial ambition, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and President Bola Tinubu.
