Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Luanda, Angola.
Shettima arrived in Abuja on Monday after concluding his engagements at the high-level summit, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha.
Shettima Presents Nigeria’s Position. At the summit, Shettima represented Nigeria in deliberations centred on peace, security and conflict resolution across the African continent.
According to Nkwocha, Nigeria called for stronger African-led mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts, while urging urgent continental action against recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks targeting Africans and other nationals in South Africa.
The Vice President’s participation reflected Nigeria’s continued commitment to strengthening the continent’s peace and security framework and promoting African-led solutions to regional challenges.
Nigeria Supports Luanda Action Plan. Nigeria also expressed support for the Luanda Action Plan adopted as part of efforts to strengthen peace and security across Africa.
The country advocated sustainable financing for Africa’s peace and security architecture and urged AU member states to take greater collective responsibility for addressing conflicts on the continent.
Nigeria further called for increased African ownership of solutions to the continent’s security challenges, stressing the need to reduce excessive reliance on external intervention.
Shettima travelled to Luanda on Saturday to represent President Tinubu at the extraordinary AU summit.
He was accompanied by senior government, defence and security officials who took part in various engagements during the visit.
The Nigerian delegation also met with members of the Nigerian community in Angola, with discussions focusing on issues and concerns affecting Nigerians residing in the country.
After completing his official engagements, Shettima returned to Abuja on Monday, bringing Nigeria’s participation in the summit to an end.
His return comes as the Federal Government continues to advocate stronger African cooperation in preventing conflicts, tackling insecurity and improving the continent’s capacity to independently address its peace and security challenges.
