The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has donated ₦15 million to the School of Nursing Sciences, Holy Rosary Hospital, Emekuku, Owerri, Imo State, reaffirming his commitment to advancing education and healthcare in Nigeria.
The donation was made during Mr Obi's visit to the institution as part of his ongoing nationwide outreach to educational and healthcare facilities. During the visit, he met with the school's management, staff, and students, and reiterated the need for sustained investments in sectors critical to national development.
Addressing the students, Mr Obi described healthcare professionals as indispensable to every society, stressing that the world depends on their services.
"The world needs you more than you need the world because healthcare is one of humanity's most fundamental needs. Any nation that truly desires development must invest in the education and training of healthcare professionals, who remain indispensable to the well-being and productivity of society," he said.
Mr Obi expressed delight after inspecting the institution's computer laboratory, which he had previously supported. He commended the management for the significant progress recorded since his earlier intervention.
The NDC presidential candidate also recalled his past support for Iyi-Enu Hospital and Borromeo Hospital, noting that both institutions have since evolved into teaching hospitals. He said their transformation reinforces his conviction that consistent investment in health and education yields lasting benefits.
Expressing optimism, Mr Obi said he looks forward to seeing Holy Rosary Hospital attain teaching hospital status in the future.
He further urged governments at all levels, private organisations, and public-spirited Nigerians to prioritise investments in healthcare and education, describing the sectors as the bedrock of national growth and poverty reduction.
"Our vision must be to build a Nigeria where functional institutions produce competent professionals, where investments are directed to critical sectors that lift people out of poverty, and where every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to succeed. That is how we will build a nation where the son of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody," he said.
Mr Obi concluded by reaffirming his enduring message of hope, declaring, "A New Nigeria is Possible."
The latest donation adds to Mr Obi's long record of supporting educational and healthcare institutions across the country, reflecting his continued advocacy for human capital development as a pathway to national prosperity.
