The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to reject the bail applications filed by 10 defendants facing trial over an alleged clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Ogun State.
The defendants are accused of involvement in the production of 2,419.48 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, with the alleged operation valued at about ₦480 billion.
Defendants Seek Bail. The 10 defendants, comprising seven Nigerians and three Mexican nationals, have been in custody since they were arraigned on July 10, 2026.
Their counsel, Chief Benson Ndakara, asked the court to grant them bail, arguing that they are presumed innocent until proven guilty and are prepared to provide credible sureties and comply with any conditions imposed by the court.
The defence also raised concerns over the health of some of the defendants, claiming that they require specialised medical attention.
NDLEA Opposes Release. The NDLEA, however, opposed the applications, describing the defendants as potential flight risks who could evade trial if released.
The prosecution told the court that three of the accused persons are Mexican nationals, while the first defendant, whom the agency identified as the alleged financier and organiser of the operation, holds both Nigerian and Mexican citizenship.
The agency further alleged that a clandestine laboratory was established at Iloti Village in Ogun State and equipped for the illegal production of methamphetamine.
According to the prosecution, law enforcement officers recovered equipment, chemicals and other materials allegedly connected to the production of the illicit drug from the facility.
Court Fixes September 2 For Ruling. After hearing arguments from the prosecution and defence, Justice Akintayo Aluko adjourned the matter until September 2, 2026, for ruling on the bail applications.
The 10 defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court's ruling will determine whether the accused persons remain in custody or are granted bail pending the continuation of their trial.
