Kwale — Residents of Kwale in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State have expressed concern and frustration following the reported increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, to ₦1,420 per litre in parts of the town.
The latest increase has triggered fresh concerns among motorists, commercial transport operators, traders and other residents, who fear that the development could further increase the cost of transportation, food and other essential commodities.
Some residents who spoke with Kwale Post described the development as another heavy burden on households already struggling with the rising cost of living.
A resident said the continuous increase in petrol prices was making it increasingly difficult for ordinary people to meet their daily needs.
“Every time we think the price has stabilised, another increase comes. ₦1,420 for a litre is becoming too much for ordinary people to cope with,” the resident lamented.
Commercial transport operators are also expected to come under pressure as the higher cost of petrol increases their operating expenses. This could translate into higher transport fares for passengers travelling within Kwale and to neighbouring communities.
The impact could also extend to small businesses that depend on petrol-powered generators for electricity, with increased operating costs potentially forcing business owners to raise prices of goods and services.
The latest development in Kwale comes amid a broader increase in petrol prices across Nigeria. Reports indicate that several filling stations in different parts of the country have raised their pump prices to between ₦1,400 and ₦1,450 per litre following an increase in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery's gantry price from ₦1,265 to ₦1,350 per litre.
The increase has been linked to rising international crude oil prices, with Brent crude trading above $100 per barrel amid continuing tensions affecting global oil markets.
Residents of Kwale, however, are calling for measures that would prevent further increases and reduce the burden on households and businesses.
As the new petrol price continues to filter through the local economy, residents are watching closely to see whether transportation fares and the prices of food and other commodities will rise further.
