Abuja, Nigeria — The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that its annual policy meeting on admissions into tertiary institutions will hold on May 11, 2026.
The highly anticipated meeting is expected to bring together key stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector, including vice-chancellors, rectors, provosts, and heads of regulatory agencies, to deliberate on admission processes for the 2026 academic session.
A major highlight of the meeting will be the announcement of the national minimum cut-off marks for admissions into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
Beyond the cut-off marks, the policy meeting will also set the official admission guidelines for all tertiary institutions, outlining procedures and standards to be followed during the 2026 admission exercise.
According to JAMB, the session will include a comprehensive review of application statistics and candidate performance, which will guide decisions on acceptable minimum standards for admissions nationwide. Stakeholders will also evaluate the 2025 admission exercise, identifying challenges and proposing reforms to improve transparency, fairness, and efficiency in the system.
Education analysts say the outcome of the meeting will play a crucial role in shaping access to higher education in Nigeria, especially as competition for limited admission spaces continues to increase yearly.
While the national cut-off marks are expected to provide a baseline, individual institutions such as the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, and Obafemi Awolowo University are likely to maintain higher departmental cut-off points based on demand and available capacity.
As of press time, JAMB has not indicated any major changes to the existing benchmark ranges, but observers note that final decisions will depend largely on candidates’ overall performance in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Candidates, parents, and institutions across the country now await the outcome of the May 11 meeting, which will officially signal the commencement of the 2026 admission season.
Kwale Post will continue to monitor developments and provide timely updates as decisions emerge.
