The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Gombe State has sought the support of traditional institutions to boost participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Sa’ad Umar, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gombe and Chairman, Gombe State Council of Emirs and Chiefs, His Royal Highness Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III.

Dr. Umar expressed appreciation to the Emir for his long-standing support to the Commission, recalling his past contributions such as recording and airing advocacy messages on voter registration, Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection, and the promotion of peaceful elections.

Updating the royal father on the exercise, the REC noted that online pre-registration began on 18th August 2025, while in-person registration commenced on 25th August 2025. He, however, expressed concern over the more than 60,000 uncollected PVCs in the state.

He appealed to traditional and religious leaders to mobilize citizens, not only to register but also to collect their PVCs.

In his response, the Emir assured INEC of the full backing of the Gombe Emirate Council and the State Council of Emirs and Chiefs. He immediately directed District and Village Heads to engage religious and traditional leaders in their domains to ensure the sensitization reaches the grassroots.

The royal father also underscored the need for women to actively participate in the electoral process.

The visit featured an interactive session where Dr. Umar addressed questions and clarified issues raised by District and Village Heads.

The REC was accompanied by the Acting Administrative Secretary, Fadimatu Aliyu Bakari, and other members of the State Management Team.
