HURPA Raises Concern Over Government Spending, Calls for Accountability

The Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the mismanagement of public funds in Nigeria, warning that the continued diversion of government resources into non-essential projects is worsening the economic hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, HURPA said the rising cost of living, unemployment, poor healthcare, insecurity, and inadequate infrastructure are evidence that public funds are not being directed towards sectors that improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

According to the association, many government budgets contain huge allocations that fail to address the immediate needs of the people, while critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, roads, water supply, and youth empowerment continue to suffer from underfunding.

HURPA noted that Nigerians deserve value for every naira spent by government and called on public officials at the federal, state, and local government levels to embrace transparency, prudence, and accountability in the management of public resources.

The association urged anti-corruption agencies, oversight institutions, and the National Assembly to strengthen monitoring of budget implementation and ensure that every approved project is executed in accordance with the law. The group also encouraged citizens and civil society organisations to actively monitor public spending and report suspected cases of waste or diversion of public funds.

"Nigeria is blessed with enormous human and natural resources, yet millions of citizens continue to struggle with poverty because government spending is often not aligned with the real needs of the people," HURPA stated.

The organisation stressed that good governance requires responsible budgeting, transparent procurement processes, and effective project implementation. It added that governments should prioritise investments that create jobs, improve public services, and stimulate economic growth rather than expenditures that offer little benefit to the public.

HURPA further called on all levels of government to publish detailed reports on budget implementation and make financial information easily accessible to citizens in order to build public confidence and promote accountability.

The association concluded by urging leaders across the country to place the welfare of Nigerians above personal or political interests, insisting that responsible management of public funds remains one of the surest ways to reduce poverty, restore public trust, and accelerate national development. 

Recent public debates by civil society organisations, governance experts and budget analysts have similarly emphasized the need for stronger transparency, oversight and accountability in Nigeria's budgeting and public expenditure processes.
