Asaba - In a major political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, Deacon Kennedy Kawarhiebie Pela (Ken Pela), the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate in Delta State, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The defection declaration took place at a well-attended ceremony in Asaba, Delta State, where Ken Pela, alongside other former Labour Party chieftains and supporters, formally joined the ADC fold.

Speaking at the event, Pela described his decision to join the ADC as a move rooted in conviction and purpose rather than political convenience. He stated that the values, vision and leadership philosophy of the ADC align with his long-held agenda for a “Vision Better Delta”, emphasizing inclusive governance, accountability and sustainable development.

“I have joined the African Democratic Congress because I believe in its core values — integrity, competence and people-centered leadership,” Pela said. “My Vision Better Delta roadmap finds strong resonance in the ADC’s commitment to progress and good governance.”

Top officials of the ADC were on ground to receive Pela into the party.

Mabel Oboh, South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary of the ADC, and

Senator Andrew Uchendu, Deputy National Chairman,

among others, described the development as a significant boost to the party’s political traction in Delta State.

Also present at the ceremony was Mrs. Lauretta Onochie, former Special Adviser to the Presidency, who expressed optimism about Pela’s contribution to the ADC’s growth and strategic positioning ahead of upcoming elections.

Political analysts say Pela’s defection could reshape the landscape of Delta State politics, particularly as parties position themselves for the 2027 polls. Pela’s track record as an economist, investment banker and grassroots mobilizer gives him a strong profile that the ADC leadership believes will deepen the party’s appeal among voters across the region.

In his closing remarks, Pela reiterated his commitment to service and urged his supporters to remain focused on the collective goal of better governance for Delta State.

“I am confident this new path will deepen our shared mission for transformative leadership,” he said.
