Force Leadership Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Over Effurun Shooting

Effurun, Delta State — The Nigeria Police Force has announced the dismissal and impending prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun on April 26, 2026.

The directive follows an earlier order by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who mandated the immediate withdrawal of all officers linked to the incident from the Delta State Command. The officers were subsequently redeployed to Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary procedures.

According to a statement issued on April 29 by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) concluded its investigation and found the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, guilty of gross misconduct.

The report established that ASP Usman acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms. His conduct was described as unlawful, unprofessional, and a breach of his oath to protect lives and uphold the law.

Following the findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers. The Inspector-General has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The statement further disclosed that upon completion of administrative formalities, the affected officers will be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP stressed that the Nigeria Police maintains zero tolerance for abuse of power and extrajudicial actions, noting that no officer has the right to take a life outside the provisions of the law.

He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr. Mene Ogidi, assuring them that justice will be served and that the matter will be handled with the seriousness it deserves.

The Police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while reiterating its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The development comes amid growing public concern and calls from civil society groups for justice and reforms in policing standards across Delta State.
