The Edo State Police Command has ordered a discreet investigation into a clash involving personnel of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency and officers of the Intelligence Response Team.
The incident came to public attention on Thursday after a video circulated on X showing an altercation between officers from the two agencies. In the footage, an IRT officer was seen firing his rifle into the air during the confrontation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, had met with representatives of both sides and directed a discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the statement, the police commissioner also ordered that the conduct of the officer captured firing the rifle be subjected to appropriate disciplinary review.
“The Commissioner of Police has also directed that the conduct of the officer seen firing the rifle be subjected to appropriate disciplinary review,” the statement said.
The command stressed that it would not tolerate indiscipline, unprofessional behaviour or abuse of police powers by any of its personnel.
It further warned that any officer or official found culpable after the investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
The police command also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining effective collaboration and mutual respect among security and government agencies in the state.
It said public safety could only be achieved when relevant agencies worked together professionally and toward a common objective.
“The incident is therefore being treated with the seriousness it deserves, without prejudice to the established working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA,” the statement added.
The command urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
It advised anyone with complaints concerning police misconduct to channel such grievances through the command’s Complaint Response Unit for appropriate action.
