The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said the publication of its presidential ticket by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has put an end to doubts about the party's participation in the 2027 presidential election.
According to the party, the appearance of its presidential candidate, Senator Sandy Ojang Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, on INEC's final list of candidates confirms that the PDP has successfully completed its nomination process despite months of internal disputes.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party's National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, described the development as a significant victory over what he called sustained attempts to undermine the party's credibility.
He said the publication of the names of Senator Onor and Umar demonstrated that predictions that the PDP would fail to field a presidential candidate had been proven wrong.
"The publication of our presidential candidate and running mate has finally laid to rest the misinformation and propaganda designed to create doubts about the future of our party," Mohammed stated.
INEC recently released the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 general election, following the conclusion of the nomination process.
The announcement comes after months of leadership crises and legal battles within the PDP that raised concerns over whether the party would meet the statutory deadline for submitting its candidates.
The publication is also seen as a setback for the rival PDP faction led by former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), which had adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate.
The Turaki-led group had claimed last week that it manually submitted its list of candidates to INEC after allegedly being denied access to the commission's electronic nomination portal.
Mohammed maintained that INEC's publication of the party's candidates validates the position of the Wike-backed leadership and dispels months of speculation surrounding the party's readiness for the election.
He thanked party members and supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora for remaining loyal despite the prolonged internal challenges, saying their confidence had strengthened the leadership's resolve to rebuild the party ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party also expressed appreciation to INEC, the judiciary and security agencies for carrying out their constitutional responsibilities, describing their actions as a demonstration of commitment to the rule of law and due process.
Reiterating its commitment to reconciliation, the PDP leadership called on aggrieved members to return to the fold, stressing that unity remains essential to the party's efforts to regain political power in the 2027 general election.
